Fun Statistical Facts
Some statistics that I have come across seem really bizarre. For example, did you know that more than 10 people are killed by a vending machine each year? Who would have thought that a vending machine selling snacks and drinks could be so lethal?
If you think that sounds dangerous then you should really watch out for those hazardous ball point pens. Yes, even ball point pens can be extremely hazardous for your health. This is because on average, 100 people choke to death on ballpoint pens every year!
Not all statistics are grim though. Some are quite awesome such as the fact that the American inventor, Thomas Edison, patented almost 1,300 inventions in his lifetime. One of his most famous inventions was the light bulb. This was in the form of an incandescent filament in a glass bulb with a screw base.
One rather unusual statistical outlier is that one woman gave birth to an amazing 69 children! During her 40 year life span, she gave birth to 16 twins, 7 triplets, and 4 quadruplets.
On this note, if you thought the human population has been successful overall, you should compare it to ants. This is because the ratio of people to ants is a staggering 1 to 1 million.
Moving closer to home, one computer accessory and remote controls manufacturer produced statistics on where you are most likely to find your remote control if you have lost it. Apparently, they claim that there is a 2 percent chance of it being outdoors or in the car, a 4 percent chance of your lost remote being in the fridge, and a staggering 50 percent chance that it is stuck between your sofa and cushions. They didn’t mention the remote controls that disappear under the sofa, which is where I nearly always find mine when I seem to have mislaid one!
