Living in the populous twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad makes me a true son of the soil. My Hyderabad is known for its beautiful Moghul architecture and palaces. It is the home of the nawabs and fine ethnic cuisine. The opulence in the style of living and the many palaces that are dotted around Hyderabad’s Deccan plateau, are e a rich evidence of the grand Moghul era.
One of the main landmarks of this culturally diverse but ethnically rooted city is the Hussainsagar lake. The Hussain Sagar or tank bund as it’s commonly known as is a lake in Hyderabad built by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562, during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah. It is spread across an area of 5.7 square kilometers and is fed by River Musi. A large monolithic statue of the Gautama Buddha, erected in 1992, stands on an island in the middle of the lake. This majestic water body not only gives an aesthetic beauty addition to the city but also divides Hyderabad and Secunderabad into two distinct units-thus called the twin cities.
The season of Ramadan has just gone by and the devout and faithful with their fasting and offering made the season full of piety and cheer. The celebration however goes on for two days after Eid-ul-Fitr and Hyderabadis are seen in all their festive gear making merry and spreading the message of love, peace and joy. Hussain Sagar during the last days of Ramadan is seen teeming with scores of shoppers rushing by and crowds gathering to buy ice-cream from the many ice-cream carts on the backs of the lake. There is true festivity in the air.
Hussain Sagar is not just full of cultural history but also gives us Hyderabadis, a recreation heaven. With lake cruises offered and sailing regattas carried out this lake also serves as place for young couples to meet and look afar into the beauty of the setting sun.
Come to Hyderabad and taste the myriad flavors that this diverse city has to offer.
