Republic Day: is a national holiday observed on 26th of January. This is observed to mark the formation of the Indian Constitution which happened on January the 26th 1950. This was a part of the Indian sub-continent obtaining its independence in totality.

All business establishments remain closed on that day and everyone has a day off. A lot of efforts are put into celebrating republic day. There are a lot of military parades which are carried out with great gusto and splendor. A grand parade is held in the nation’s capital and the event begins with the country’s prime minister placing a wreath at India gate to pay homage to all those who sacrificed their lives for the country. The president of India takes the military salute during the parade in New Delhi while state governors respectively take their military salutes in state capitals. A foreign head of state or dignitary is usually the chief guest of the president on republic day.

Bravery awards and medals are given to the personnel from the defence services, to civilians and those martyr’s who gave up their lives for the country’s safety. The armed force’s helicopters fly above the parade area and as per tradition there is a showering of rose petals on the audience. The parade includes a lot of skills in equestrian and also motorcycle stunts performed by the Armed forces personnel. The parade ends with a “fly past” by the Indian Air Force, which involves fighter planes of flying past the dais, symbolically saluting the president. These leave trails of smoke in the colors of the Indian flag-orange, white and saffron. There are many national and local cultural programs focusing on the history and culture of India. Children have a special place in these programs. Many children receive gifts of sweets or small toys. There is a festival of folk dance also held in the capital and all throughout the country.
